Lead: Strategy, Partnership & Creative outreach
Dibyadeep Chaterjee, PhD
PhD in Conservation Biology with 10+ years of experience in field research and community engagement across Indian ecosystems.
I am a Conservation Ecologist and avid art enthusiast with a doctorate in Wildlife Sciences and over twelve years of experience working across India's diverse landscapes. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have worked with government agencies, research institutions, NGOs, and international organizations, gaining a broad perspective on the challenges and opportunities of conservation in practice. Currently, I serve as the In-country Conservation Education Manager (Consultant) for Chester Zoo, where I oversee their conservation education projects across India.
What drives me is a deep commitment to finding practical and sustainable pathways for people and wildlife to coexist. I believe that conservation cannot thrive in isolation; it must integrate rigorous scientific research with the lived experiences and traditional knowledge of indigenous forest communities. This multidisciplinary, collaborative approach has guided my journey and continues to shape my work to this day.
Beyond conservation science, art has been a lifelong passion and source of inspiration. I find profound meaning in folk and indigenous art forms, which convey timeless messages of harmony, interconnectedness, and, above all, coexistence. For me, art is not only an expression of beauty but also a transformative medium for conservation storytelling and for promoting mindfulness and mental well-being. This belief has also shaped my creative work, including designing the 2022 cover illustration for a special issue of Biotropica (Wiley) that honoured Dr. Kamal Bawa and celebrated biodiversity research in India.
Through Sachitra, I aim to weave together my twin passions of science and art, igniting dialogue, awareness, empathy, and encouraging action toward a mindful, sustainable future.
